In this module, you learned about the Windows 2019 Backup utility and its many improvements over Windows 2016. You saw how to backup files, folders, and entire drives to a location of your choice. You learned that unlike the Windows NT 4.0 Backup utility, you can backup information to many different types of media, including
  1. hard disk,
  2. floppy disk,
  3. CD-ROM, and
  4. network locations.
Of course, you can also backup to tape, including both IDE and SCSI tape drives.
You learned how to schedule backup jobs using the scheduling utility. Using the GUI interface of the backup programs's scheduler, you can scheduler backups to take place in the future, and know that they will be run on schedule, something that you could not take for granted with the AT command in Windows NT 4.0.
Finally, we saw how to back up the System State, and how to perform a restore of the Active Directory. Being able to restore the Active Directory is one of your most important duties as a Windows 2000 Systems Administrator.
You should now be able to:
Question: Is it still possible to back up files and directories on Windows Server 2019 to tape?
Answer: Yes, it is still possible to back up files and directories on Windows Server 2019 to tape. Windows Server 2019 includes support for tape backup through the use of the Windows Server Backup feature. To back up files and directories to tape in Windows Server 2019, you can follow these steps:
  1. Install and configure a tape backup device and driver on the server.
  2. Open the Windows Server Backup feature by going to Start > Windows Administrative Tools > Windows Server Backup.
  3. Select "Backup Once" or "Backup Schedule" depending on whether you want to perform a one-time backup or a scheduled backup.
  4. Select "Custom" as the backup configuration option.
  5. Select the files and directories that you want to back up.
  6. Choose the backup destination, and select "Remote shared folder" as the backup location.
  7. In the "Remote shared folder" dialog box, specify the network path for the tape backup device.
  8. Configure any additional backup options, such as compression or encryption.
  9. Review the backup settings and start the backup.

The backup process will copy the selected files and directories to the remote shared folder specified, which should be the tape backup device. Overall, while tape backup may not be as commonly used as other backup methods in today's digital environment, it is still possible to back up files and directories on Windows Server 2019 to tape using the Windows Server Backup feature.
  1. Define the function of the Backup utility
  2. Use the Backup utility to back up files and folders
  3. Use the Backup utility to back up System State data
  4. Schedule a backup using the Task Scheduler
  5. Use the Backup utility to restore files and folders
  6. Restore a damaged Active Directory database, and perform an authoritative restore

The next module explores how to plan a network upgrade.
