The inetd Solution

The accept queue depth must be tuned based on expected connection rate and service startup time. If the service takes 2 seconds to restart and receives 200 connections per second, the backlog needs at least 400 slots plus a safety margin. Insufficient backlog causes the kernel to refuse connections even though the socket exists, sending SYN-ACK packets then immediately sending RST when the accept queue fills.

Socket State Management

Systemd manages sockets through their complete TCP state lifecycle. When systemd creates a socket unit, the socket enters the LISTEN state immediately. When a connection arrives, the kernel performs the three-way handshake (SYN, SYN-ACK, ACK) and transitions the connection to ESTABLISHED state in the accept queue.   • Optimizing service initialization: Reduce startup time by lazy-loading configuration, using connection pooling, and deferring non-critical initialization.
  • Accepting the trade-off: For infrequently-used services, occasional startup latency is preferable to consuming resources continuously.

Connection Queueing Performance

The kernel's accept queue efficiently handles connection bursts even when the service is stopped. During a service restart, hundreds of connections can queue in kernel memory with minimal overhead. When the service resumes, it processes the queue rapidly. However, extremely large backlogs consume kernel memory. On systems handling thousands of connections per second, monitor kernel socket buffer memory usage via /proc/net/sockstat and tune /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_max_syn_backlog appropriately.

Resource Efficiency

Socket activation reduces memory consumption for idle services. A socket consumes only a few kilobytes in kernel memory, while a full service process might consume tens or hundreds of megabytes. For systems running dozens of optional services, socket activation significantly reduces baseline memory usage.
