IP Address Subnet Requirements - Exercise

This exercise walks you through a realistic planning scenario: your organization’s IP routing environment has accumulated years of small changes, and the result is uneven performance and reduced reliability. Your task is to identify the criteria you would evaluate before redesigning the routing and subnetting strategy, and briefly justify why each criterion matters.

Objective

Define the criteria used to plan a new IP routing and subnetting infrastructure.

How to complete this exercise

  1. Read the scenario.
  2. In the response area, list the criteria you would evaluate when redesigning the routing/subnetting environment.
  3. For each criterion, add a short justification (one or two sentences) explaining why it must be considered.
  4. Click Submit to view the model answer on the results page.

Scoring

This exercise is unscored. You will not submit your response to a tutor. Use the results page to compare your criteria against a recommended checklist used in real-world TCP/IP design work.

The scenario

Over the course of the last 12 years, a number of minor modifications have been made to your organization’s IP routing environment. Although not individually significant, the cumulative effect has produced an unstructured environment suffering from performance and reliability problems.

Your task

  1. Which criteria will you evaluate in creating your design?
  2. Describe each criterion and why it must be considered.
